Why I Made A Foam Latex Puppet
Making a foam latex puppet for stop frame animation

Ever since I was little I've wanted to make a stop frame animation. I remember being in tranz like amazement when I saw the gumby and pokey toys movie on tv and no one was touching them. In high school I tried to film a stop fame animation of the science room skeleton dancing. That was my first and last atempt until now. Back then I used a VCR camera. Now I use a green screen with a nice set of lights and a SLR Nikon camera. I've learned how to sync up mouths moving with words and have become very effecient with programs like adobe after effects for editing. Even though I now know how it all works I am still amazed when I see my characters move around. It makes me smile just like when I was a little. Someday, on a saturday morning, I'm going sit down on the floor of my living room in my pajamas with a old black and white tv with a great big bowl of captin crunch and watch my own animations. The bowl will be so big I'll need an entire gallon of milk.

Step By Step Photos of Building a Foam Latex Puppet Character

These are some pictures of the making of my foam latex pupper Robert Glitch. First ,I built an armature out of wire and filled it out with card board and tape to get the general shape. After I have the basic shape I add all the details in using Plastaline clay. After that I pour a two part mold and once it drys I remove the sculpure. Once the mold is ready I used polytek F5 foam to fill it up and added the wire armature inside the liquid so he would be bendable and hold poses. Next I close the mold and wait for the foam to rise and set. I removed my little monster, trimmed the edges painted him and added all the details like teeth and eyes.

Now that I've learned how my next goal is to integrate hand puppets and make a funny short film that takes no effort to laugh at.
